It’s been twenty years since the end of the world.
Every major religion and culture had their own end-of-the-world scenario: Ragnarök, the Rapture, things like that. And every one of them was absolutely convinced that their story was the only correct option. The problem is, they were all right. At least to some extent. And they all happened simultaneously.
On an ordinary Tuesday morning during a particularly mild December, the world ended when all those scenarios happened at once. Things exist because you believe in them. Not the other way around. So, when that much conflicting belief crashed into each other, reality couldn’t cope. Universes collided. Landmasses changed. Weather patterns went haywire. Technology crashed and magic swelled in the world. Gods, demons, Fae, witches, vampires, and every imaginable nightmare and creature suddenly had to co-exist on a planet too small for even the humans who had previously inhabited it. Billions died or disappeared altogether. Myths and legends came to life. Chaos ruled.
The event became known as the Breaking.
In the years since, humans have carved out civilization inside walled cities that are loosely governed at best. Outside of those walls lie dangerous territories ruled by the non-humans.
Repairing the damage has been a monumental task. And learning to exist alongside nightmares has proved even harder.
